Everyone has a responsibility to not only tolerate another person’s point of view, but also to accept it eagerly as a challenge to your own understanding, and express those challenges in terms of serving other people. ~~ Arlo Guthrie ~
Tolerance of others is an important a lesson as anything else a person will learn. We must be tolerant of others and respect each other’s differences, we will then have a more harmonious world to live in. It is important to embrace understanding and acceptance of others, and their opinions, as they are. As the world moves toward a global society, tolerance and respect for other people, cultures, values and ideas become increasingly important. We must be prepared to break through prejudice, history and indifference to make tolerance in today’s society work.
Having tolerance of others can cause peacefulness and reduce any conflicts. Peace is a good breeding ground to nurture tolerance. Tolerance and respect are important traits in people. If you want to receive respect, you should first be respectful to others. We are all of the same race, the human race. Everyone has their own opinion. We should care enough about each other that we can respect each other and love one another, despite our differences. We should unite for good causes and find common ground upon where we can work and bring people together to be the best that they can hope to be. Arrogance is anger and anger is insecurity. Tolerance is accepting someone for whom they are. You don’t have to like them, but you should respect them.
One way to develop a more tolerant outlook is learning to appreciate and value difference. Educate yourself about other people and cultures. Take the time to learn about different cultures and belief systems. Talk to people you don’t know, and read newspapers and websites that you don’t normally look at. Treat others as you would like to be treated. People are different, look for the positive in them and that will help establish an attitude of tolerance.
But must we be tolerant others who are actively seeking to do harm? For them, their decision to actively pursue harm against others should not be tolerated. It is a behavioral choice that requires consent. Tolerating those who are actively disruptive and harmful is itself a passive evil. They must be curtailed, peacefully. We do not need to agree, but we do need to try to understand and respect those who differ from us.
