LISTENING Shows Respect

The success of conversation consists less in being witty than in bringing out wit in others.  The man who leaves after talking with you, pleased with himself and his own wit, is perfectly pleased with you.  ~~ La Bruyere, “Characters”  ~

Listening shows respect.  It conveys the sense that what you have to say is important to me.  That says that you are important to me.  Listening means being present to the person with whom you are engaging.  Through active listening, you let the other know that you really do understand what they are saying.  You may not agree with them, but they will know that they were heard and understood.  This eliminates the arguments resultant from one party or both feeling that they were not heard.  Practicing good listening is not just a technique, it is a way of being with others.  Trying to be a good listener is an exercise in character building and the rewards are well worth the effort taken.  The success of any relationship can be measured by the listening capabilities of both parties.
